LOST Catch-22

Previously on LOST

  • Desmond saving Claire from drowning and revealing his visions to Charlie
  • “You’re gonna die Charlie”

Notes/Quotes/Moments:

General

  • A camping trip? Technically, aren’t they camping?! LOL
  • Superman vs. Flash
  • Searching for the cable that Sayid and Hurley found earlier
  • Doesn’t this cable have something to do with the former communication center?
  • Hurley’s getting scruffy LOL
  • Whistling while walking across the beach
  • Jin telling ghost stories (a camping tradition) in Korean with the flashlight
  • “With enough money and determination, you can find anyone.” – Desmond, quoting Penny
  • Desmond using Hurley as a step stool (ouch!)
  • A Sawyer and Kate moment
  • A Kate and Jack moment
  • A Kate and Sawyer encounter
  • Of course the satellite phone battery is dead upon arrival! (Or, maybe there is interference jamming its use?!? Just speculating…)
  • Sawyer figuring out how he got lucky
  • “Uhh, that can’t be good” – after seeing a large splash far out in the ocean

Desmond’s flashback

  • In prison? No, in a monastery
  • “For whatever reason, your path has led you here and now you’re one of us. Welcome, brutha”
  • Moriah Vineyards – name reference to the Mt. where God asked Abram to sacrifice Isaac
  • Was involved and engaged to Ruth over the course of 6 years and Desmond got cold feet a week before their wedding.
  • Became a monk and endured a vow of silence
  • “You’re not cut out to be a monk, God has bigger plans for you. You’ve just spent too much time running away to realize what you’re running towards.”
  • “Whatever comes next”
  • Jewelry-Store-Lady sighting

One-Liners

  • “Did you eat those mushrooms Jack warned us about?” – Charlie
  • “Do you need me to make you a mix tape??” – Sawyer looking for an ‘afternoon delight’
  • “Is my doorbell busted again?”- Sawyer
  • “You two arguing over who’s your favorite Other?” – Sawyer
  • “It fell out of the purple haze when the hatch went blammo. If we don’t play every 108 minutes, the island’s gonna explode.” – Sawyer to Jack, while playing ping pong
  • “Thanks for the heads-up for bring the umbrella, dude” – Hurley to The-One-Who-Gets-Flashes-of-the-Future (Desmond)

Themes or Motifs

  • Desmond’s failures: to marry his 6-year girlfriend, to be a monk, to let Charlie die
  • Sacrifices: Abraham, Desmond’s choices
  • Catch-22: book in backpack (contaning photo of Des & Penny), Desmond’s choice to save Charlie or be consistent with his vision

Good Stuff
The overlay of Desmond’s two story lines – him meeting Penny and the troop retrieving the parachuter – was well dramatized. I was hoping that the parachuter was still alive and that it was Penny, but of course, we knew it wouldn’t be written that way! Now, I’m curious about the back story of how the helicopter got to the island.

Back to the beach: Seeing Jack and Sawyer playing ping-pong – how classic! The abducted lostaways chat about not needing to escape and their return to ‘normal’ island life. Jack is making oatmeal for the group dinners and Kate is even doing dishes (I hope that wasn’t the same water she was using to wash the sweat off her back…).

I always like to see how the characters meet. For Desmond and Penny, it appears to be a chance meeting. But with the Jewelry Store Lady somehow connected to the monastery, you might never know. Things aren’t always as they seem!

Answers
We see more about Desmond’s visions and how he has learned to interpret them. The visions are much like a puzzle – Desmond has the pieces, but without the ‘big picture’ to see how they fit, they are only a jumble. He’s learned that if he doesn’t ‘follow’ them, they change.

We know that Penny is connected to the ‘rescue attempt’ from the dropped backpack. Most likely the action she took after the electromagnetic anomaly (aka purple haze). Is the hula girl figure a clue that she came from Hawaii?

We learn that Desmond met Penny immediately after being fired as a monk.

Questions

  • Did Desmond’s failure to allow Charlie to die really change the outcome of his vision?
  • Who was the woman/pilot who bailed from the helicopter?
  • How did the helicopter find the island when the Others claim it can’t be found? (It had to be from the electromagnetic pulse…)

Next week
“A stranger has fallen from the sky but the promise of rescue is only the beginning. And the fate of this survivor, will be revealed. “

“What happens to pregnant women on this island?”; “I lose either way” - Sun

American Idol Top 7 Performances

Country Music Night with mentor Martina McBride

(Click the idol talk button to see more reviews!)

Phil Stacey
Where the Blacktop Ends
Country has been the best genre for Phil this far. I thought he had a good performance (no goose pimples though) and I definitely prefer the all-black shirt and pants look for him. If this were Country Idol, Phil would be a contender. He looked so comfortable on the stage tonight.

Jordin Sparks
Broken Wing
I did get goose pimples with Jordin though! Wow, what a great performance. She looked beautiful and has such a great presence (Oh wait, did I say that last week?!?) Really, she does. She has a great singing style and personality.

Sanjaya Malakar
Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About
Bandana Boy did his usual voodoo. And that’s all the written space I’m devoting to Sanjaya.

Lakisha Jones
Jesus Take the Wheel
Such a big, powerful voice. My comment to DH during the chorus was that her big, awesome voice was actually too big for the song. I like that she had an emotional connection to the song because her performance felt more connected. It just lacked some vocal control.

Chris Richardson
Mayberry
Poor Chris was off his game tonight and visibly disconnected – but understandably so as a Virgina resident after yesterday’s rampage.

Melinda Doolittle
Trouble is a Woman
I loved this performance. Melinda always exudes confidence, but this week her performance really popped! As Martina said, her mannerisms and delivery draw you into the “story” and her vocals are always perfect. Simon telling her to quit looking surprised made us laugh.

Blake Lewis
When the Stars Go Blue
A little rough in some places, but an okay performance overall. It did not have the wow factor that last week’s performance had though. His voice reminds me of the lead singer of an old group… The Smiths, I think? I can’t quite place it…

I never thought I’d say it, but I missed Haley this week. Despite her showgirl appearance, at least she was more interesting than the other showgirl Sanjaya. Darn Fanjayas!

Best of the Night: Jordin and Melinda

Bottom two: Chris and Phil (Maybe if I don’t say Sanjaya, I’ll be delightfully surprised.)

Stargate SG-1: The Quest P2

From Mr. TV Junkie, guest contributor

Stargate SG-1, Episode 11×1, The Final Season

It’s a very exciting and sad time for the SG-1 series. It is the eleventh and final season of what I believe is one of the best sci-fi shows ever on TV.

From the season premiere, the final season is off to a great start and appears to be going out with a bang!

The SG-1 team finally finds what they are looking for from a dormant Merlin who was frozen by Morgan le Fey 1,000 years earlier. As Merlin lies dying, Daniel Jackson obtains some (yet to see how much) of Merlin’s knowledge and powers bestowed by Merlin himself.

Meanwhile, the team is still being chased by Adria and the Ori. In this episode, Adria and the Ori catch up to SG-1, but Daniel Jackson saves them using his new powers from Merlin. Daniel Jackson, because of saving his team, is captured by Adria and the Ori. The biggest question of the season is how strong are Daniel’s powers from Merlin.

I’m really looking forward to this season. TPTB seem to be taking the show to new levels with the characters. Jack O’Neil (Richard Dean Anderson) is coming back for one more final episode. I’ve also heard that Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter) will be signing on for Atlantis after this season of Stargate SG-1 is over and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) will appear in a few episodes of 24. How cool is that?!?

Drive "The Starting Line"; "Partners"

“There are 500 million cars worldwide – over half in the US alone. And, as long as there have been cars there has been ‘The Race’. Secretly moving across America’s roads and highways, it may be happening around you now. So the next time some jerk cuts you off on your way to work, cut’em some slack. They could be racing for their lives.” – opening monologue

I am a sucker for TV show premieres.

As a steady fan of writer Tim Minear, Nathan Fillion (Buffy & Firefly) and Amy Acker (Angel & Alias), the previews for Fox’s new drama ‘Drive’ had me interested.

In the two-hour launch of the show, I felt a little bit of LOST (gradual character development in small doses and the presence of “Them”, the people running the race), a little bit of Heroes (a group of diverse people brought together by circumstance) a little of 24 (deadlines to meet, lives at stake), a little bit of Nowhere Man (in the freaky way normal people were involved with the race like the waitress and the truck driver), a little bit of “The Fast and the Furious” driving action (illegal racing, but with no nitro), and a lot of “Bullrun” on Red Bull.

I’d love to post a full blow by blow synopsis, but since the next episode is tomorrow night and tonight’s was 2 hours long, I will be short and post links :)

Contestant profiles:
On official FOX Drive site
Drive The Race fansite
Reason 2 Drive database (FOX site)

Good stuff

  • I look forward to finding out why contestants were chosen – especially Alex and Wendy – and what Corrina will bring to the race.
  • The tie-in with the waitress and the truck driver (I knew they had something to do with the race before they revealed it)
  • The clues to their destination
  • Don’t come in last
  • Corinna’s flashback from 27 years ago. Pretty graphic and grabbing.
  • Brian Bloom and his blue eyes
  • The plastic baby
  • How Wendy figured out her dilemma with “the package”
  • The brothers coming to the aid of another team

Will I keep watching? Sure! Especially since it comes on before 24 and I have an opening in my TV viewing schedule… But, mainly because it is compelling to me and I like the characters thus far. At least, most of them. The team of 3 ladies from New Orleans and the military husband and his wife literally drove me nuts. I suppose we’ll get more of their backstories tomorrow and maybe I’ll like them more.

Did you watch the premiere episode? What did you think? Will you keep watching?

Notes from the Underbelly Pilot: Animal Style

I caught the pilot of Notes from the Underbelly because the previews looked comical. After three of my own pregnancies, I could relate and laugh at the humor. Having the narration by the husband’s point of view was classic.

Notes, Quotes, and “Been there, Done that” Moments:

  • The moment of epiphany when you think “I think I could be a mom…”
  • Reading the PG books and websites with weekly PG updates
  • Knowing someone is pregnant because they switch to decaf (or throw tequila over their shoulder)
  • “Breastfeeding destroyed my boobs.”
  • The irreverent single girl friend
  • Being pregnant at the same time as a best friend
  • Not answering the phone during LOST (LOL)
  • Feet up for 30 minutes
  • “I’m hungry!” “I mean really hungry.”
  • “She’s pregnant” – dude hands over the goods
  • Minivan shopping
  • The collection of strollers
  • The pulled-together, expectant couple
  • “Why does everything have to be baby-friendly? I mean, you’re just setting the kid up for disappointment when it finds out the world isn’t adult-friendly.”
  • “We need the bigger car for all the baby stuff.”
  • (gasp) “Ice Cream!”
  • The PG brain and PG fatigue
  • Trying to take a test with PG brain (reminded me of grad school – while PG)
  • Feeling baby’s kick!
  • Nesting
  • Changing the office/spare room into a nursery.
  • “Are we allowed to talk about what she’s eating?” (Tacos with pumpkin filling)
  • “The old me is gone…”
  • “There’s a reason why pregnancy is 9 months…”
    • “TEN months. They don’t tell you that.”

LOST – One of Us

Previously on Lost:
Juliet being recruited
Her sister getting pregnant
Juliet and Kate being Left Behind

Juliet’s Flashback

  • Dr. Juliet Burke
  • “You’d think they take this corporate secrecy a little too seriously.”
    • “I’m never going to fit with these people.”
  • “Downtown” playing in the background.
  • Ethan sighting
  • Richard sighting
  • We see Juliet’s willing, yet reluctant transition to the island.

Notes/Quotes/Moments:

  • Kate’s look when Jack defended Juliet.
  • “It’s orange juice with a considerable amount of tranquilizer in it.”
  • “You’ll see things there that you never imagined.”
  • Gulp. gulp. thud. (as Juliet downs the juice)
  • “The last leg is a little bumpy…”
  • We see the dock, sub, island upon Juliet’s arrival.
  • “Well if it isn’t 3 Men and a Baby”
  • Sawyer’s look of relief seeing Kate
  • Sun doesn’t look pregnant… Just like Claire doesn’t look 2 months post-PG (realistically speaking)
  • “I don’t remember you on the dock. When they put bags over our heads and shocked us.”
    • “I was off that day”
  • It appears the island women cannot get pregnant, but there is no cancer (with the exception of Ben’s ‘tumor’).
  • The image of the swingset was brought up (Kate mentioned Sayid was chained to it).
  • Juliet was sleeping with Goodwin (who infiltrated the tailies camp)
  • Ben takes Juliet to Mikhail at the fully functioning communication station.
  • Richard is in Arcadia Park
  • “See you in a week”
  • Ben doesn’t like being called a liar, yet that is what he does.

Good stuff
Just when we begin to think that Juliet might be sincere, we see that she and Ben have planned everything from the gas bombs, to Kate and Juliet in the forest, to taking advantage of Jack’s trust, to setting up Claire’s illness (caused by an implant) in order to get her to the beach for some reason.

I had my doubts about her alignment because I couldn’t imagine that Juliet carried or dragged Kate into the jungle on her own. Then, did you see her expression after her showdown with Sayid and Sawyer? Once out of sight, the hard resolve melted and she was visibly shaken by that close call, wondering if they bought it. She thinks they see straight through her lies. The most obvious to me was: why did they just leave her behind?

In Juliet’s original flashback (pre-bus accident), she doesn’t seem like the assertive type. However, on the island she has learned defensive skills (taking down Kate in her failed surprise attack) and can manipulate and lie. Must have been during the Others’ employee orientation boot camp.

In some ways, Juliet’s actions aren’t completely surprising. We saw how Michael succumbed to the will of the Others – he killed Ana Lucia and Libby, then shot himself, freed Ben, played Jack-Sawyer-Kate-Hurley and delivered them into the Others’ hands. We know he didn’t actually want to do those things; they were the cost he paid to release his son Walt and get off the island. (I wonder if we’ll ever see them again?)

We know that Juliet desperately wants to get back to see her sister Rachael and Julian, the two-year old nephew she has never met. And, we know that Ben will use this to leverage Juliet into doing whatever he wants. The question is how far she is willing to go to get what she wants.

Answers
We know why Claire was kidnapped. Or at least, what they want the Losties to think. We know that Ethan had a drop location with the Others. We know the entire past two episodes are an elaborate ruse. (But, then again, that is the entire premise of the show. LOL)

Questions
In the last few minutes we were introduced to a whole list of new questions: what did they implant Claire with? And, why would it cause her to get sick? Why do they need Juliet on the beach to spy on or get close to the Losties? What is happening in a week?
