LOST: Through the Looking Glass *Updated*

Where do I begin? (I decided to watch the 2-hour finale without the laptop, so a break from my normal full recap tonight.)

So many good things and questions in tonight’s episode. I hope I can remember them before I fall asleep.

(Beware of spoilers before opening the link if you haven’t seen the episode!)

Penny Widmore made another season finale ‘real time’ cameo. So, does she sit and stare into a camera 24/7 waiting for the island’s signal to get unjammed? I still don’t understand how she knew to watch for the electromagnetic anomaly in last season’s finale (S2)…

Hurley saved the day with… the blue Dharma van! Classic. Either Sawyer and Juliet were watching from the trees for a few hours, or Hurley really hauled to get over to the van. Or, maybe it was stashed somewhere near. Yeah, that’s it. Still was a great moment written in.

Mr. Friendly/Tom – I knew he wouldn’t kill Sayid, Bernard, and Jin! But, I guess Ben (aka Master of Deception) only ordered them to stage their deaths.

Why did Charlie choose to die? He could have saved himself. Did he trust Desmond’s flashes so much that he was willing to die? Apparently so.

Mikhail (The Incredible Healing Man) escaped death… again. However, if wounds heal themselves differently on the island, why is Patchy’s eye gouged out? A pre-island injury? Or is there something more symbolic like Juliet’s branding?

Juliet – betrayed Ben, kissed Jack, lied to Jack, helped Sawyer. She is one character who keeps me guessing.

The satellite phone – The Losties were hoping that connecting to the real world would result in their rescue, but given Ben’s warning and Locke killing Naomi… I’m guessing there’s more complications to come.

The return of John Locke - Once again, John recovers miraculously and can walk. He killed Naomi, but couldn’t kill Jack. Then we see him disappear into the forest to wherever… just whose side is he on?

Speaking of John, we hear the voices in the jungle as he attempts to end his misery and then Walt mysteriously appears. Similar in fashion to how Richard Alpert first appeared to Young Ben.

Ben – the character we love to hate. He is the perfect adversary to the Losties and he has so much up his sleeve and secret knowledge. I’m so glad he wasn’t one of the season finale casualties. I have a feeling they may find themselves trying to work together if the newcomers to the island are ‘hostiles’. If so, Juliet will be the go-between between the Losties and The Others.

The 5 significant deaths:

  1. Charlie – sacrificed himself somewhat blindly to ensure Claire and Aaron’s rescue.
  2. Tom – signifies an internal change in Sawyer. I always thought Tom was pretty harmless after his interaction with Jack and Locke. Sawyer didn’t hesitate to put him down…
  3. Naomi – what does Locke know that would cause him to kill her? Who was she really and who was on the satellite phone? Why did Locke kill her, but not shoot Jack???
  4. The unknown Lostie – who was in the coffin? Obviously someone without friends/family. I’m guessing future Locke, but he’d never leave the island. Sawyer? I’m guessing he’s at home waiting for Kate. Sanjaya? Oops, wrong recap.
  5. (I’ll need to rewatch to pick this one!) Updated: As I was drifting off to sleep, I picked the guy that Hurley ran over with the van (Price?). It’s not the dead guy that’s important, but the fact that sweet Hurley took him out! Ultimately, this death completely turned the table on The Others and put the Losties in power.
    • “Attention Others! Come in Others… we got you bastards,” Hurley on the 2-way. LOL

Morgue count:

  • The Others – 12 (wow!)
  • Losties – 1 (R.I.P. Charlie)
  • Unknown – 2 (Naomi & coffin-dude)

Why is Jack (The “Fixer” of Things) so bent on getting back to the island? Why does he have so much guilt? What happened to make him so obsessed and suicidal? (Didn’t he say golden ticket? or was it pass?) Where is Penny when you need her?

I questioned whether this was a flashback after reading Paul Levinson’s review last week. I kept getting thrown off because they were mentioning Jack’s deceased father. (Or is he really dead?)

Updated: My initial thoughts of Jack trying to return to the island reminded me of the Star Trek movie “Generations” where Malcolm McDowell’s character was willing to do anything to return to the ‘energy ribbon’.

Okay, I could talk for hours. I’ve already been typing and contemplating for 2. I’m anxious to hear what you are discussing about the Lost finale! If you posted a review or recap, please leave a link to your LOST finale post URL (not your blog URL) in the Mr. Linky, so I and others can visit! Another LOST linky is up at Rocks in My Dryer too!

  1. Oh! Can you believe it? I typed my first responses last night. But hopefully during my daughter’s nap I can write my real recap!

    Enjoyed yours!

The thing that’s confusing me right now is Tom & Ben not killing Sayid/Bernard/Jin.

  2. When listing the deaths, don’t forget about the two Other chicks in the Looking Glass.

  3. Mine’s up!

  4. Ha ha nice headcount!

I’m not surprised, when the going got tough, that the lead characters of the show all became somewhat more “heroic”. Charlie, in my mind, needed this redemption (especially after basically murdering Ethan in Season 1).

So many mysteries, and only 9 more months until it returns! :(

  5. Such a good finale! February can’t come too soon!

  6. Great recap! Lots of questions! Think we’ll get them all figured out when season 4 begins? LOL!
