American Idol: Men’s Top 8

This week’s intro piece divulged a little known secret about each contestant.

Blake Lewis
(Alter-persona comedian)
I enjoy Blake’s sense of style and confidence as a performer. I love that we have a contestant with more of a hiphop edge. He’s original and I always expect a good performance from him. I was surprised Randy and Paula had not heard the song… I’m quite sure I have. That was odd.

Sanjaya Malakar (with straight hair and a hula fetish)
Agreed with Simon that there was improvement over the past week. Vocally, I thought his voice had a great tone and warmness, but his song choices are “safe” to me. Then again, I see him as a ballad singer, so singing something different might not fit him. This week’s piece allowed him to show more of his range and strength, but was still “a-ight”. He’s got the cute kid vote from America.

Sundance Head (The Man with the Fat Suit)
I always think of Meatloaf when I see and hear Sundance sing. I enjoyed his rendition of Pearl Jam, although I never really thought of them as “singers”. He is this week’s pick for VFTW.

Chris Richardson (Less 40)
Boy, you still looked good in your “chunky” football days. Nice to see a non-bouncy performance from Chris. Found this article on the hometown boy and his very own fan forum.

Jared Cotter
Fun song choice and challenging, too. The chorus was a little rough, but the verse and bridge sounded smooth and on-key. Having been on this side of the screen, I didn’t “feel” that Jared was yelling. It sounded full and powerful. His movement on the stage flows, but still pushes the border into over-performing.

Brandon Rogers (The classic pianist – awesome!)
I enjoyed his energy and choice of song. I still think he can do so much more and hope he’ll make it back to show his stuff.

Phil Stacey (the self-imposed bald guy)
Tough song. I looked for the trax to sing it for a performance once and decided the range was too broad (for my non-Idol voice LOL). You have to have a strong upper and lower register to really make this song float and sound natural.

Chris Sligh (Curly Sue Sligh)
Loved the song choice (although the judges didn’t). Chris has a full, rich sounding voice – I thought this song

American Idol: Top 10 Men

Phil Stacey (29)
John Waite’s Missing You is one of my favorite songs from that era, so my expectations were high… and I really enjoyed his rendition! Sounded smooth and confident. I loved the tone of his voice and I felt it was a good fit.

Jared Cotter (25)
Marvin Gaye – Let’s get it on. Another great song and I felt he sang it well. A couple off-pitch notes but noting too bad. A semi-safe song. I kind of agreed with Paula that he was borderline over-performing… Ryan sure looks short next to Jared.

AJ Tabaldo (22)
Great song choice for him. I thought it matched his personality and voice. I like that the song was slow in the beginning which showed off his tone and then built up toward the end which showed off his flexibility, range and strength. His performance seemed really natural. I’m so glad he had a good performance this week! I hope to see more. Pinoy-power ;)

Sanjaya Malakar (17)
He’s such a cute kid. Maybe not quite an idol yet. His voice sounded good for the song, but didn’t really showcase it. I kept waiting for him to start belting out, but the song didn’t allow for that. I really want him to pick a song that will really show off his voice. The boy has perfect teeth.

Chris Sligh (28)
Such a sweet dedication. Even though it was a low tempo song, it really showed off his voice. The lyrics were so fitting and I thought it was sweet he acknowledged his wife and made eye contact with her.

Nick Pedro (25)
Fever – another favorite. It was so good to hear a song that fit him. He was comfortable and his tone made me melt. I do agree with Simon that he was lacking a little for the camera, but it was much improved overall from last week.

Blake Lewis (25)
Virtual Insanity. I love this guy. He is entertaining and talented and unique. And, I love that I can always see him grooving to the other performances up in the loft.

Brandon Rogers (29)
Time after Time. Idol contestants should know that they need to bring it to the stage. He has such a great voice. Such a sweet dedication and I felt his heart, but will it get him through to next round?

Chris Richardson (22)
What a fun performance! I liked Chris’ style and charisma during this song. I love songs that make me want to get up and dance. He’s got a little Justin T. thing going on.

Sundance Head (28)
What a good guy. His dedication to his son was so touching. This was the first performance of his that I liked. He does have a great voice.

The men did step up their game this week. My personal faves included AJ, Blake, and Chris R. I am not sure who will be in the bottom two, but Jared, Brandon and Sanjaya were in the “safe song choice” category.
