LOST - Ji Yeon

(If you haven’t watched the episode, you might be spoiled.)

What a weird episode. So far I like that this season has more distinct story arcs rather than the random character flashbacks. Or maybe it’s because we’re getting more answers than questions. Nonetheless, it was a strange episode.

#1 strange thing: Regina, wrapped in a heavy chain, walking robotic-style to the railing of the boat and jumping off into the ocean. Wha?!?!

#2 strange thing: The captain and crew do nothing to rescue Regina. In fact, it barely fazes them and they could care less. Odd. Very odd.

#3 strange thing: How creepy is it that the underwater grave of Oceanic flight 815 was completely staged? The captain of the boat claims it was Benjamin Linus (but I don’t always believe everything at first…). The argument the captain presents as to why they’re looking for Ben - the staged wreckage, putting the families through unnecessary grief, etc. - was compelling. Why is Ben going to such great lengths to protect the island?

#4 strange thing: Charles Widmore is the “boss” of the freighter. Okay, so we knew that. But, seriously, why is he that interested in finding the island? I don’t believe he was just trying to find the island for Penny to find Desmond… It sounds like his connection and vendetta to Ben runs much deeper. And, just why did he send Desmond out on a boat to the island.

#5 strange thing: This episode featured a flash forward and a flash back. Didn’t see that one coming, although I had a feeling that the scenes of Jin and Sun off the island were disjointed. Oh, and Sun is one of the Oceanic Six. Although that didn’t surprise me. Being pregnant, I thought she might be one of the survivors allowed or encouraged to flee the island. I am hoping that Jin is still alive on the island in the future…

6 strange thing: The whole cancer-cure thing. Bernard made an appearance for the first time in months. We revisited the story of his wife being cured of cancer on the island. Another person strangely healed from an injury is Lock who was once crippled pre-island. Who knows what Patchy’s incredible healing power is, since he seems to keep returning from the dead.

Then, there is Ben, who suffered from a life-threatening tumor. Why is he different? I found this LOST theory on cancer properties that helped give that storyline some structure. Who knows if it is true or not, but it was very interesting from a biological point of view.

#7 (not-so) strange thing: Kevin Johnson (aka Michael) reappears. This (somewhat) answers the question I’ve been asking for the past two seasons - what happened to Michael? From the upcoming scenes to next week we should know more. I accidentally read a spoiler that Michael would appear on the boat - is he the “spy” Ben speaks of? Michael shot himself and murdered Libby and Ana Lucia to save his son, Walt, from Ben and The Others. No telling exactly what he will do…

Now on to the good stuff:

#1 Good Thing: Sun has her baby and they appear to be healthy.

#2 Good Thing: Hurley, bless his heart, goes to visit Sun and newborn Ji Yeun (translated “Heavenly Patience”) to accompany them to Jin’s (supposed) gravesite. According to Lost-Wiki, the date on the tombstone is the date of the plane crash. Hmmm.

#3 Good Thing: I loved to see the interaction between Sun and Jin talking about naming the baby (on the island) and the scene where he offers his forgiveness. Both have been redeemed and their marriage restored.

#4 Good Thing: No Losties died this week!

Did you watch the episode??? What did you think??? I’m curious to know!! Leave a link to your post if you blogged about tonight’s episode or if you find any interesting (non-spoilerish) trivia or recaps.

LOST - The Constant (2-28-08)

“You can’t change the future” - Daniel Faraday

So many good things in this episode, despite the majority of it taking place on an unknown freighter and the UK.

I finally have some understanding to the crazy season 2 ending when Penny received a call that the electromagnetic pulse had taken place. At that time, I thought that Desmond had somehow time traveled forward or found a way to message her in the future to tell her where he was and how to find him. It seemed like the only plausible explanation at the time. This episode somewhat confirmed that possibility.

I think the concept of “the constant” was revealing. Because… if the Losties are all unstuck in time, they are like each other’s constant. The majority of them had some type of connection in their pre-island life, and now they are stranded together. Maybe that will make a difference later on.

Thus far, we have seen threads of different “constants” that tie our Losties together in so many ways… If I tried to list them all, it would take me 94 days. Or 96 (depending on whether you’re on the freighter or the island ;) )

Very interesting to find out that Daniel Faraday has a past encounter with Desmond. And, that Daniel Faraday was trying to develop a method of time travel… even if it was only subconscious and not physical. Also interesting to know that Daniel considers Desmond as his constant. The smartest thing that physicist did was to write a note to his future forgetful self (which I’m guessing forgetfulness is his side-effect). Do you think polar bears are side effects too?

Last week I asked why no one on the freighter was answering the satellite phone. Apparently, George Minkowski was having a date with insanity unstuck in time and suffering from the lack of a constant. Count him as another character dying with his eyes wide open.

Speaking of the freighter… why the heck are they there? Who sent them? Who sabotaged their communication? Ben’s mole? Did Ben’s Mole leave the door open so Sayid and Desmond could escape out of sick bay? I wonder if it’s Patchy. He’s the infamous Go To Guy.

I loved the heartfelt moment between Desmond and Penny. He has been lost (no pun intended) for three years and Penny has, ironically, been searching for him for exactly 3 years. She knows about the island. Does her father know about the island too? After all, he did win the auction of the Black Rock captain’s journal which was put up on the block by Hanso. Hmmm… I’m getting a headache trying to keep up with details.

Phones. Cut communication lines. Too bad no one has WiFi out in the Pacific. If it was Patchy on the boat, he’d certainly manage how to disable their communication system.

So, how did Minkowski manage to suffer side effects? I assumed he was always on the freighter. I’ll have to watch that scene again, maybe I missed something…

There’s so much left to talk about, but I’ll stop here. Now that we’re talking potential time travel… I want to go back and watch all the seasons over! What did you think of tonight’s episode??

LOST - Eggtown (2-21-08)

After watching the end of the episode, I got goosebumps! Did you??? I thought the writing and how the storyline was revealed was excellent.

Our question of why Kate wasn’t in jail was answered. And we know that she’ll always be in CA. (I mean who would leave that nice nanny and spacious house in the O.C.?) We also find out who “he” is.

We also find out that in addition to the Oceanic 6, there were 2 that also survived the crash (in their fabricated post-island story).

Kate may be snuggling with Sawyer, but she loves Jack back. She went back to the barracks to see what life lie ahead of her if she went back with Jack. That leaves the question… what happened to cause Kate and Jack not to end up together post-island?

From the look on Jack’s face after being invited to the house, he is haunted by Aaron. I’m guessing that Aaron’s “rescue” was a result something he did not agree with - either he was taken against Claire’s will or Claire died. I’m also guessing that Kate doesn’t want her mom to meet Aaron for fear she might know it’s not really Kate’s baby (assuming it isn’t Kate’s baby, but Claire’s).

The helicopter hasn’t arrived. Much like Desmond’s boat never left the island. However, I think Desmond’s boat has more to do with the magnetic pull (pre-violet sky). The island seems to be on a time delay, so there is still a physical anomaly with the island.

In the previews, we see there is a “storm” that the helicopter must enter. I wonder if that is what Juliet slept through on her way to the island. Like there’s some Bermuda Triangle properties going on. (I don’t read the forums or spoilers, so I’m sure this theory has come up before.)

Good stuff & observations

  • Show opens with a close up of John’s eye (What is up with the eye motif? The island eye sees all? LOL)
  • It’s morning and we also see Locke in the kitchen preparing food and pulling something from a bookshelf. A play off of the season 2 premier of Desmond in the hatch and season 4 with Jack in his L.A. kitchen.
  • Underground tunnels in Ben’s house which probably connect to other areas of the island.
  • Ben’s in lock down again. Even more interesting (and foreshadowing) is John making himself at home in Locke’s house and becoming more Ben-like…
  • I need to get a Dharma coffee mug!
  • Kate is still calling Sawyer by his real first name, while Sawyer is calling her Freckles again.
  • More one-liners from Hurley
  • No one of the Oceanic 6 ever answers direct questions from people
  • Sawyer becoming the island poster child for literacy and lenscrafters

  • You’ll be alright. I’ll keep you safe. - a still shirtless and pantless Sawyer in his Joe Boxers
  • My name is John Locke and I’m responsible for the well-being of the island… Enjoy your breakfast - Locke
  • You know Jack I’ve heard you say that story so many times, I’m starting to think you believe it. - Kate
    • I didn’t mean it… - Jack

Questions

  • What little memory experiment were Daniel and Charlotte doing with the cards? (I think they were sent to test/compare the physical properties of the island)
  • Wouldn’t it be completely odd to move into The Others’ barracks? Didn’t they just disappear? I assume John knows where they are (and presumably The Others trust him).
  • Who does Miles work for? Dharma? Hanso? And why does he specifically ask for $3.2 million dollars?
  • Why wasn’t the freighter answering the satellite phone?
  • Why does Kate have Aaron? Especially after being reluctant to hold him.
  • How did Ben get off the island since the sub is blown?
  • Jack, Hurley, Kate, Aaron… Who are the other Oceanic 6?!?!

LOST - The Economist (2-14-08)

Wow. We wanted some answers and we got a few, however indirectly. Clues and motifs seemed plentiful. If only we knew exactly how they were connected. (Spoilers ahead if you have not watched the episode.)

Our ep was Sayid-centric in flash-forward fashion. At first, we see him on the island. He walks over to Naomi - whose eyes are open in a cold stare like our spider-bitten, diamond-stealing Nikki and Paolo - and gently shuts them and covers her body. A foreshadowing, perhaps, of our Iraqi torturer gone soft?

Sayid notices a bracelet with the inscription “N, I’ll always be with you. R.G.” Initials of anyone we know?

Sayid makes a deal with Frank to bring Charlotte back.

You bring Charlotte back safe, and I will take you off this island.” - Frank

Immediate cut to Sayid on the golf course (The Seychilles) approached by a man with an Italian accent.

He suggests using the 5 iron, but Sayid sticks with the 7 (Numbers, numbers!) and they bet on who can get closer to the pin. Sayid hits left-handed.

I do nothing” - Sayid

Until he mentions being one of the Oceanic 6, I was not sure if we were past or present. (I knew Sayid would be one of the O-6!)

Sayid loses the bet and insists on “paying” Mr. Avelleno. Instead of a wallet, Sayid pulls out a gun and kills him in time for the sprinklers to water the greens… he’s obviously not going soft, yet.

We next see Sayid, undercover, in Germany and making contact with another target. Or, link to his target.

I love Europe. Everyone speaks English.” - Sayid

Elsa, a tall blonde like Shannon, works for an economist. Sayid tells her he’s a head-hunter. Nice pun.

Back on the island, Sayid plans to recapture Charlotte. He refuses to take Jack, who pointed a gun at Locke and pulled the trigger last ep (not “good diplomacy”, but takes Kate (Sawyer would protect her) and Miles.
Meanwhile, Locke’s crew is in the jungle as he comes up to the line (trench) of light gray powder in the ground. Since the first episode with the cabin, I thought it was volcanic ash. It’s not so creepy in the daytime… and without the cabin. Hmmm… where did it go? All I can say is C-R-E-E-P-Y.

Jack sends Kate away with the group retrieving Charlotte. He knows that she’ll be safe with Sawyer - and away from the strangers to the island. From the look in her eyes, she realizes what he’s doing.

This guy Sayid…. what was he? A Diplomat?‘ - Frank (pilot)

No, he was a torturer.” - Jack

If a man can’t wear his tuxedo by the 5th date, why bother.” - Sayid

More flash forward. Sayid goes to the opera with Elsa and effectively evades her questions, but appears to melt (a tiny bit) at her coy gazes and innocence.

Daniel, the physicist, decides to play with his high tech gadgets. He calls the boat to have Regina fire a “payload” to his coordinates. Regina counts down it’s arrival as Jack pensively steps back under the trees, but nothing arrives.

That is far more than weird…” - Daniel

What’s with the swingset. These people have day care?” - Miles

Sayid, Kate and Miles arrive at the barracks (I always thought it was at least a half day’s hike, but they are a couple hours from the beach…). The swings blow in the wind as if ghost children are playing.

They approach the buildings to find… Hurley gagged and stuffed in a closet. He’s been left behind by Locke and the group. Plausible after Hurley’s last confrontation with Locke.

I can’t believe it’s been 100 days since I’ve seen a game” - Jack about the Red Sox winning the series.

Payload approaches. They all stand there as if it couldn’t hit one of them. Hell0! If it were me, I’d run for cover and not stand next to a aircraft with combustible fuel.

We see a very, very odd occurrence. The rocket contained a clock. Miles’ digital clock says 2:45:03 while the rocket’s clock says 3:16:22. There’s a 31 minute difference. Does time pass slower on the island than “real” time???

Sayid, Kate and Miles group goes to Ben’s house where Sayid finds a bookcase covering a closet entrance. There’s a suitcase. He enters and finds foreign currency and multiple passports for Ben. So, apparently he does leave the island.

Locke, cleverly thinking one step ahead, manages to capture the three. Hugo hangs his head, sorry and somewhat ashamed that he misled his friends. Sayid is thrown in the same room Kate was held in, while she is in Ben’s bedroom with Sawyer having a heart to heart.

How long do you think we can play house?” - Kate

Why don’t we find out” - Sawyer

Sayid successfully negotiates Charlotte’s release with Locke before we flash forward to him snuggling with Elsa. She talks about being in love. Just as he decides to confide in her, Elsa’s pager goes off. Sayid’s target is in Berlin.

His name is on a list” - Sayid

He tries to warn Elsa to leave Berlin, but in a “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” twist she shoots Sayid in the shoulder. She calls her boss who was suppose to page at 10:30 - Sayid hasn’t given up the name of his boss. He shoots her dead and closes her eyes. She is wearing a similar bracelet to Naomi’s.

Desmond has joined the helicopter group to ask why Naomi was carrying the photo of Penny and him (found in Naomi’s Catch-22 book). They don’t know why, so Desmond demands to fly out on the copter.

Before flying out, Daniel tells Frank to fly out on the same exact bearings as they came in. Sayid, Desmond, Frank, and Naomi take off across the water toward the boat.

The day I start trusting him [Ben] is the day I’ve sold my soul” - Sayid

Ironically, we hear Ben’s voice at the end. In Berlin. As he treats Sayid’s bullet.

Why are you crying? Because it hurts or because you were stupid enough to care for her? These people don’t deserve our sympathies. Need I remind you what they did the last time you thought with your heart and not with your head?” - Ben

“You used that to recruit me to kill for you” - Sayid

“You wanna protect your friends or not, Sayid” - Ben

So much to absorb. Lots of good stuff and great lines, but it’s late and I’ll have to post more later.

Random one-liners:

- In case you zoned out while you were tweezing your goatee…
(Miles to Frank)

- Why don’t we take a gun and point it at his big toe and send it to market… and if he still doesn’t want to tell us, we can move to roast beef” (Sawyer)

- Good luck, send me a postcard (Jack to Sayid)

- Oh, awesome, the ship sent us another Sawyer (Hurley)

- Now you know what it’s like to be me (Kate)
- Does that mean I should wait 20 minutes and go anyway? (Jack)

- Oh, yeah, she gets a gun (Miles about Kate)

- He’s talking to the angry, Chinese guy (Hurley)

- I saw you snap that guy’s neck with that breakdancing thing you do with your legs. Think I’ll hang back here. (Hurley)

- Well, I guess they’re running out of jail space. (Ben to Sayid)

- I lost a dollar you know. I didn’t think you’d fall for your friend as bait. (Ben to Sayid)

- So what I’m your prisoner? (Kate)
- If that sort of thing turns you on (Sawyer)

LOST - The Beginning of the End (1-31-08)

It’s a good thing we had the refresher episode (Past, Present, Future) since LOST has been off-air for what feels like forever. I’m live blogging, but going back to fill in afterwards, so forgive the disorganization.

Great opening. We see someone pouring juice in the kitchen as if getting ready in the morning. It is a clean-cut Jack is watching the morning news. It’s bright and sunny outside. Somewhat similar to the S2 premiere showing Desmond in the hatch.

Car chase - orange Camero - driver is Hurley?! Does anyone remember what kind of car his dad was supposed to help him rebuild? Ana Lucia’s partner questions Hurley and won’t admit he knew AL. I think the Losties have an agreement with Oceanic not to talk about what happened. Or it’s simply to protect whoever was left behind.

“I’m one of the Oceanic 6.” So, it sounds like six people returned to civilization - we know Jack, Hurley, Kate… any guesses on the other 3? I think Sawyer is one, because of Kate’s reference to “him”.

One-liners on the island:

“If Charlie didn’t flip that switch, we’d still be getting a busy signal on that fancy phone.” - Rose

“I wanna do a cannonball” -Hurley

Flash forward: Hugo has a visitor, attorney for Oceanic, “Are you fine, Mr. Reyes… you’re in a mental institution. .. Are they still alive?” So, it does appear that they may be protecting those that chose to stay on the island.

After finding out about Charlie, Sawyer reaches out to to Hugo… I thought that was a poignant moment after he shunned Hurley in last season’s finale. Of course, Hugo did save everyone with the VW van…

Okay, Jacob’s cabin is just plain freaky! And, Hurley “saw” Jacob rocking in the chair. The eye popping up in the window was too intense for me LOL I am assuming it was Locke’s eye… and another play on the “eye” theme. The voices in the jungle are also creepy. I kept hearing “suicide”.

“Better call the boat and let them know she’s getting a big pile of firewood.” Ben, about a hurt and missing Naomi.

“You can get yourself good and lost out here, Hugo.” Did you notice Locke uses a Ben tactic to rally Hugo and not let “Charlie die for nothing”.

The couples reunite… except Claire and Charlie. Hugo breaks the news to her. It was a nice tribute to Charlie. Of course, it’s LOST with plenty of opportunity to see him again…

Flash forward: Hurley sees Charlie. (See, I told you he’d be seen again. And, doesn’t he look nice with the haircut?) “They need you Hugo. You know they need you.”

Back on the island: “Do no harm” Jack shot at Locke, but the gun wasn’t loaded. I thought this was an important moment in Jack’s mindset. He’s shifted; he’s willing to kill a member of the Losties, driven by his rage. We saw a glimpse of that when he pummeled Ben - but he still did not kill him.

Science vs. Faith: The Losties split up once again.

Flash forward: Hurley playing basketball, visited by pre-beard Jack. Hurley knows Jack isn’t there for a friendly game of HORSE.

I’m sorry I went with Locke, I should’ve went with you.” This apology sounds loaded. Hmmm… Hurley left with Locke, so how did he end up on the ride home?

“We’re never going back!!!”

“Never say never.”

“Feels like 100 years ago that we came out here together”

Questions:

  • Is Naomi there to help them or get to the island for a different reason?
  • Who was the guy that chuted onto the island and what does he have in store for the Losties?
  • Who are the six Oceanic survivors who returned?
  • What are they hiding? Is it to protect the Losties still hiding on the island? Or, were they responsible for their deaths in some way?
  • What makes Jack change his mind and become obsessed with finding the island?
  • Is Kate’s “him” a really good lawyer who was able to get her pardoned from her crimes?
  • Did Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lily get married yet?
  • Where were Sawyer’s great one-liners in this episode??
  • Who was in the coffin???!!

Got any answers/theories for me??
