LOST – The Beginning of the End (1-31-08)

It’s a good thing we had the refresher episode (Past, Present, Future) since LOST has been off-air for what feels like forever. I’m live blogging, but going back to fill in afterwards, so forgive the disorganization.

Great opening. We see someone pouring juice in the kitchen as if getting ready in the morning. It is a clean-cut Jack is watching the morning news. It’s bright and sunny outside. Somewhat similar to the S2 premiere showing Desmond in the hatch.

Car chase – orange Camero – driver is Hurley?! Does anyone remember what kind of car his dad was supposed to help him rebuild? Ana Lucia’s partner questions Hurley and won’t admit he knew AL. I think the Losties have an agreement with Oceanic not to talk about what happened. Or it’s simply to protect whoever was left behind.

“I’m one of the Oceanic 6.” So, it sounds like six people returned to civilization – we know Jack, Hurley, Kate… any guesses on the other 3? I think Sawyer is one, because of Kate’s reference to “him”.

One-liners on the island:

“If Charlie didn’t flip that switch, we’d still be getting a busy signal on that fancy phone.” – Rose

“I wanna do a cannonball” -Hurley

Flash forward: Hugo has a visitor, attorney for Oceanic, “Are you fine, Mr. Reyes… you’re in a mental institution. .. Are they still alive?” So, it does appear that they may be protecting those that chose to stay on the island.

After finding out about Charlie, Sawyer reaches out to to Hugo… I thought that was a poignant moment after he shunned Hurley in last season’s finale. Of course, Hugo did save everyone with the VW van…

Okay, Jacob’s cabin is just plain freaky! And, Hurley “saw” Jacob rocking in the chair. The eye popping up in the window was too intense for me LOL I am assuming it was Locke’s eye… and another play on the “eye” theme. The voices in the jungle are also creepy. I kept hearing “suicide”.

“Better call the boat and let them know she’s getting a big pile of firewood.” Ben, about a hurt and missing Naomi.

“You can get yourself good and lost out here, Hugo.” Did you notice Locke uses a Ben tactic to rally Hugo and not let “Charlie die for nothing”.

The couples reunite… except Claire and Charlie. Hugo breaks the news to her. It was a nice tribute to Charlie. Of course, it’s LOST with plenty of opportunity to see him again…

Flash forward: Hurley sees Charlie. (See, I told you he’d be seen again. And, doesn’t he look nice with the haircut?) “They need you Hugo. You know they need you.”

Back on the island: “Do no harm” Jack shot at Locke, but the gun wasn’t loaded. I thought this was an important moment in Jack’s mindset. He’s shifted; he’s willing to kill a member of the Losties, driven by his rage. We saw a glimpse of that when he pummeled Ben – but he still did not kill him.

Science vs. Faith: The Losties split up once again.

Flash forward: Hurley playing basketball, visited by pre-beard Jack. Hurley knows Jack isn’t there for a friendly game of HORSE.

I’m sorry I went with Locke, I should’ve went with you.” This apology sounds loaded. Hmmm… Hurley left with Locke, so how did he end up on the ride home?

“We’re never going back!!!”

“Never say never.”

“Feels like 100 years ago that we came out here together”

Questions:

  • Is Naomi there to help them or get to the island for a different reason?
  • Who was the guy that chuted onto the island and what does he have in store for the Losties?
  • Who are the six Oceanic survivors who returned?
  • What are they hiding? Is it to protect the Losties still hiding on the island? Or, were they responsible for their deaths in some way?
  • What makes Jack change his mind and become obsessed with finding the island?
  • Is Kate’s “him” a really good lawyer who was able to get her pardoned from her crimes?
  • Did Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lily get married yet?
  • Where were Sawyer’s great one-liners in this episode??
  • Who was in the coffin???!!

Got any answers/theories for me??

LOST: Through the Looking Glass *Updated*

Where do I begin? (I decided to watch the 2-hour finale without the laptop, so a break from my normal full recap tonight.)

So many good things and questions in tonight’s episode. I hope I can remember them before I fall asleep.

(Beware of spoilers before opening the link if you haven’t seen the episode!)

LOST – Greatest Hits

Previously on LOST

  • “Desmond told me I was going to die”
  • Kate telling Jack about Naomi

(Possible spoilers if you have not watched the episode yet!)

Charlie’s flashbacks – all items on a list

5) DriveShaft stuck in the rain with car troubles when they hear themselves on the radio for the first time.

4) Charlie jumping into the pool “There’s nothing to be afraid of… I promise”

3) Liam giving Charlie his DS ring at Christmas.

2) Charlie playing his guitar when it begins to rain (as in Desmond’s dream) and comes to the aid of a woman in an alley. She calls him a hero.

1) Seeing pregnant Claire for the first time on the island after the crash

Five best moments = “Greatest Hits”

Moments, Notes, Quotes:

  • Losties going inland led by Jack

“When Juliet told me they were coming, the first thing I thought was ‘where the hell are we going to hide this time?’ Hiding’s pointless. They’re just going to keep coming back, so I went out and found some help. And for the past few days, she’s been bringing dynamite back from the Black Rock. For the very first time, we know exactly what they want, when they’re coming to get it, and they have no idea that we’re going to be waiting for them… So tomorrow night, we stop hiding, we stop running, we stop living in fear, because when they show up… we’re going to blow them all to hell.”

  • Charlie talking about his supposed death with Naomi and seeing Desmond distraught in the background
    • “Hey, look in the bright side, you’re not really dead right?”
  • Looking glass station (underwater) is non functioning, but functional
  • Charlie promising Claire that everything will be fine just before Des telling him he has to die in order for her to be rescued
    • Learning how to swim flash – death by drowning
  • Bernard and Rose sighting! They’re still alive LOL
  • “My people, they’re coming… Right Now!” I knew it had to be Carl (Alex’s boyfriend) when I saw the boat in the background of the previews.
  • Rose comments to Bernard to get him in something dark (Dark-Light reference)
  • Charlie saying ‘goodbye’ to Hurley

At The Other’s camp

Ben tells the camp that Jacob wants them to converge on the Losties camp tonight (not the following night). Richard and Alex inquire about John and Ben’s only explanation is that he had an accident.

Good Stuff

I didn’t think I’d be sad if Charlie died, but this episode reconfirmed Charlie’s redeeming qualities and celebrated his “Greatest Hits”. I was struck by the ironies centered around Charlie and how they were intricately woven through this episode using the flashbacks.

We learn that Charlie was a champion swimmer and could hold his breath for 4 minutes underwater. Who would have thought a rock star had time for laps?!? Seriously though, one of his greatest moments – having the courage to jump in the pool – led to his love for swimming and ultimately may be the last thing he does before he dies.

My first thought was: is Charlie really going to die? or is he going to fail causing another ‘push back’ in the timeline.

In an emotional scene, Desmond offers to take Charlie’s place once again. But Charlie knocks him out and dives in with his blue jeans and a sack of rocks. He makes it into the station! But he is surprised to see… TPTB are so full of unexpected surprises!

I am extremely anxious to see what happens next week, yet I don’t want to wait all summer (and fall) until the start of next season!

Motifs, Symbols, or Themes

Water – Rain, learning to swim, underwater station, Desmond’s flash, diving underwater to the station, and obviously the ocean entrapping them on the island

Death as a sacrifice – Charlie, Desmond, Alex’s reasoning for Carl to warn the Losties, Sayid? sending Jack away from the action

The DS ring as a symbol of life and longevity

Questions

What is the significance of Desmond ‘seeing’ Charlie’s flashback?

Next week on LOST (the season’s finale!)

  • The group heads down the beach with Jack
  • The camp is invaded, explosions and bodies flying
  • Ben detains the ‘shooters’ and commands them to be shot
  • Jack encounters someone on their hike and says he’s getting them all off the island.
  • Charlie is bound and beaten
  • “Everything I did, I did for the island” – Ben
  • Jack is looking down in tears (?)
  • Jack tells Kate “I love you”
