LOST – Eggtown (2-21-08)

After watching the end of the episode, I got goosebumps! Did you??? I thought the writing and how the storyline was revealed was excellent.

Our question of why Kate wasn’t in jail was answered. And we know that she’ll always be in CA. (I mean who would leave that nice nanny and spacious house in the O.C.?) We also find out who “he” is.

We also find out that in addition to the Oceanic 6, there were 2 that also survived the crash (in their fabricated post-island story).

Kate may be snuggling with Sawyer, but she loves Jack back. She went back to the barracks to see what life lie ahead of her if she went back with Jack. That leaves the question… what happened to cause Kate and Jack not to end up together post-island?

From the look on Jack’s face after being invited to the house, he is haunted by Aaron. I’m guessing that Aaron’s “rescue” was a result something he did not agree with – either he was taken against Claire’s will or Claire died. I’m also guessing that Kate doesn’t want her mom to meet Aaron for fear she might know it’s not really Kate’s baby (assuming it isn’t Kate’s baby, but Claire’s).

The helicopter hasn’t arrived. Much like Desmond’s boat never left the island. However, I think Desmond’s boat has more to do with the magnetic pull (pre-violet sky). The island seems to be on a time delay, so there is still a physical anomaly with the island.

In the previews, we see there is a “storm” that the helicopter must enter. I wonder if that is what Juliet slept through on her way to the island. Like there’s some Bermuda Triangle properties going on. (I don’t read the forums or spoilers, so I’m sure this theory has come up before.)

Good stuff & observations

  • Show opens with a close up of John’s eye (What is up with the eye motif? The island eye sees all? LOL)
  • It’s morning and we also see Locke in the kitchen preparing food and pulling something from a bookshelf. A play off of the season 2 premier of Desmond in the hatch and season 4 with Jack in his L.A. kitchen.
  • Underground tunnels in Ben’s house which probably connect to other areas of the island.
  • Ben’s in lock down again. Even more interesting (and foreshadowing) is John making himself at home in Locke’s house and becoming more Ben-like…
  • I need to get a Dharma coffee mug!
  • Kate is still calling Sawyer by his real first name, while Sawyer is calling her Freckles again.
  • More one-liners from Hurley
  • No one of the Oceanic 6 ever answers direct questions from people
  • Sawyer becoming the island poster child for literacy and lenscrafters

Random quotes

  • Locked in a different room and you’re more lost than you ever were – Ben
  • I know what you’re trying to do… – Locke
    • Excellent John, you’re evolving – Ben
  • mmm, coffee smells good – Sawyer
  • I learn english… for you.. to live.. in… America – Jim
  • This is not a democracy… If I were a dictator, I would just shoot you and be on my way – John
  • You just totally scooby-doo’d me didn’t you – Hurley
  • So the arab traded you too, huh? – Miles
  • Maybe we should try another number other than the boat… like 9-1-1 – Juliet (numbers, number, numbers)
  • Don’t fire me okay – Kate’s attorney, on bringing Jack into the courtroom
  • Only 8 of us survived the crash – Jack
  • Do you love the defendant? – Melissa, the D.A.
    • No. Not anymore. – Jack
  • Xanadu or Satan’s Doom… Hurley
    • I’m reading! – Sawyer, with big chunky reading glasses
  • I know it’s in a box but it’s pretty damn good wine
  • You are terrible at this Freckles, at least tell me you want to use me for something – Sawyer
    • I wanna use you for something – Kate
  • Wanna play some backgammon?? Sawyer
  • Do you think I know what I’m doing… – Locke, having self-doubts
    • Huh? – Sawyer
  • I think they’re saying “Baa” – Sawyer
  • Oooo this is hot – Miles
  • The beds take a little getting used to – Claire
  • It all changed when I thought you were dead. My doctors have given me 6 months for the the last 3 years. I don’t want to testify against you. I want to see my grandson. – Kate’s mother
  • What, he… banished you? Well I un-banish you – a shirtless Sawyer
  • You’ll be alright. I’ll keep you safe. – a still shirtless and pantless Sawyer in his Joe Boxers
  • My name is John Locke and I’m responsible for the well-being of the island… Enjoy your breakfast – Locke
  • You know Jack I’ve heard you say that story so many times, I’m starting to think you believe it. – Kate
    • I didn’t mean it… – Jack

Questions

  • What little memory experiment were Daniel and Charlotte doing with the cards? (I think they were sent to test/compare the physical properties of the island)
  • Wouldn’t it be completely odd to move into The Others’ barracks? Didn’t they just disappear? I assume John knows where they are (and presumably The Others trust him).
  • Who does Miles work for? Dharma? Hanso? And why does he specifically ask for $3.2 million dollars?
  • Why wasn’t the freighter answering the satellite phone?
  • Why does Kate have Aaron? Especially after being reluctant to hold him.
  • How did Ben get off the island since the sub is blown?
  • Jack, Hurley, Kate, Aaron… Who are the other Oceanic 6?!?!

LOST – The Beginning of the End (1-31-08)

It’s a good thing we had the refresher episode (Past, Present, Future) since LOST has been off-air for what feels like forever. I’m live blogging, but going back to fill in afterwards, so forgive the disorganization.

Great opening. We see someone pouring juice in the kitchen as if getting ready in the morning. It is a clean-cut Jack is watching the morning news. It’s bright and sunny outside. Somewhat similar to the S2 premiere showing Desmond in the hatch.

Car chase – orange Camero – driver is Hurley?! Does anyone remember what kind of car his dad was supposed to help him rebuild? Ana Lucia’s partner questions Hurley and won’t admit he knew AL. I think the Losties have an agreement with Oceanic not to talk about what happened. Or it’s simply to protect whoever was left behind.

“I’m one of the Oceanic 6.” So, it sounds like six people returned to civilization – we know Jack, Hurley, Kate… any guesses on the other 3? I think Sawyer is one, because of Kate’s reference to “him”.

One-liners on the island:

“If Charlie didn’t flip that switch, we’d still be getting a busy signal on that fancy phone.” – Rose

“I wanna do a cannonball” -Hurley

Flash forward: Hugo has a visitor, attorney for Oceanic, “Are you fine, Mr. Reyes… you’re in a mental institution. .. Are they still alive?” So, it does appear that they may be protecting those that chose to stay on the island.

After finding out about Charlie, Sawyer reaches out to to Hugo… I thought that was a poignant moment after he shunned Hurley in last season’s finale. Of course, Hugo did save everyone with the VW van…

Okay, Jacob’s cabin is just plain freaky! And, Hurley “saw” Jacob rocking in the chair. The eye popping up in the window was too intense for me LOL I am assuming it was Locke’s eye… and another play on the “eye” theme. The voices in the jungle are also creepy. I kept hearing “suicide”.

“Better call the boat and let them know she’s getting a big pile of firewood.” Ben, about a hurt and missing Naomi.

“You can get yourself good and lost out here, Hugo.” Did you notice Locke uses a Ben tactic to rally Hugo and not let “Charlie die for nothing”.

The couples reunite… except Claire and Charlie. Hugo breaks the news to her. It was a nice tribute to Charlie. Of course, it’s LOST with plenty of opportunity to see him again…

Flash forward: Hurley sees Charlie. (See, I told you he’d be seen again. And, doesn’t he look nice with the haircut?) “They need you Hugo. You know they need you.”

Back on the island: “Do no harm” Jack shot at Locke, but the gun wasn’t loaded. I thought this was an important moment in Jack’s mindset. He’s shifted; he’s willing to kill a member of the Losties, driven by his rage. We saw a glimpse of that when he pummeled Ben – but he still did not kill him.

Science vs. Faith: The Losties split up once again.

Flash forward: Hurley playing basketball, visited by pre-beard Jack. Hurley knows Jack isn’t there for a friendly game of HORSE.

I’m sorry I went with Locke, I should’ve went with you.” This apology sounds loaded. Hmmm… Hurley left with Locke, so how did he end up on the ride home?

“We’re never going back!!!”

“Never say never.”

“Feels like 100 years ago that we came out here together”

Questions:

  • Is Naomi there to help them or get to the island for a different reason?
  • Who was the guy that chuted onto the island and what does he have in store for the Losties?
  • Who are the six Oceanic survivors who returned?
  • What are they hiding? Is it to protect the Losties still hiding on the island? Or, were they responsible for their deaths in some way?
  • What makes Jack change his mind and become obsessed with finding the island?
  • Is Kate’s “him” a really good lawyer who was able to get her pardoned from her crimes?
  • Did Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lily get married yet?
  • Where were Sawyer’s great one-liners in this episode??
  • Who was in the coffin???!!

Got any answers/theories for me??

LOST: Through the Looking Glass *Updated*

Where do I begin? (I decided to watch the 2-hour finale without the laptop, so a break from my normal full recap tonight.)

So many good things and questions in tonight’s episode. I hope I can remember them before I fall asleep.

(Beware of spoilers before opening the link if you haven’t seen the episode!)

LOST in Translation: More ‘Man Behind the Curtain’

Even after sleeping on it, I know there is still so much to think about from last night’s LOST episode. I’ve mentioned before that I try not to check into the spoilers, except I am anxious to see how this season will wrap up and see how others (bloggers, not The Others) have interpreted the symbols and references in the episode.

I’ve read some interesting recaps/reviews of “Man Behind the Curtain” that you might be interested in:

  • (Your link here… please leave a link to your recap in the comments. I can’t wait to read your thoughts!)

I’ll probably re-watch the episode this weekend. You know, after I’ve caught up on Grey’s. Maybe I’ll make Mother’s Day weekend a LOST marathon. I wonder if I can send DH and the kids out for 19 TV hours??!!!

LOST "The Man Behind the Curtain"

*Updated to add*
Links to Pre-Show and Post-Show LOST posts

Previously on LOST

  • “You seem to have a connection to the island”
  • Juliet is working for The Others
  • The Others Break camp and leave John

Random Notes/Moments/Quotes as I’m watching:

Flashback (Ben-centric, finally!)

  • Emily giving birth – to Ben
    • Emily is 7 months PG (7 mos x 4 wks/mo = approx. 28 weeks PG)
    • Father is Roger – Workman? From the VW van?
    • In the woods
    • Portland – 32 miles away
  • Mr. Horace Goodspeed greets the Linus’ (Ben is older now)
  • There is a volcano on the island
  • Natives = hostiles
  • Roger = disgruntled
  • Annie gives Ben a gift (we see the swing set)
  • Ben’s birthday is remembered as the day his mother died
  • Voices/whispers of the natives as Ben approaches the fence?
  • Emily at the fence conversing with Ben
  • Ben leaves the compound
  • More voices, then suddenly…
  • Richard in the jungle?
  • Ben had Daddy issues of his own
  • Ben chose sides in the Dharma vs. Natives battle

Present time

  • Appears Locke took the recorder (or probably was given the recorder by Richard…) and is operating on his own or possibly with Richard
  • “We all answer to someone, John”
  • Mikhail returns seeking Ben for the first time since his ‘death’
    • Explained as the fence not at lethal level
  • The Others turning against Ben?
  • Ben being called a liar again
  • “Don’t you people want to be rescued?”
  • “We have some catching up to do”
  • What is the powder?
  • “We’re here”
  • Empty chair, but Locke hears him
  • Surprise ending, but I don’t think it’s the end of that story line.

Good Stuff
[My head is spinning. I can't even begin to put all these thoughts into words.]

We see Ben actually express fear when he realizes his recorder is potentially missing. Richard was supposed to leave it for Juliet with Ben’s instructions. It seems Ben feels threatened by John when he does return with his father on his back. Lots of backstory revealed and new implications.

On the beach, we see that Juliet has confided in Jack and shared The Other’s plans. Can we trust her now? From the previews, it looks like Sayid will be blowing something up and tackling someone…

Again, so much to digest and I’m not sure what to make of it yet.

[After watching Evangeline Lily (Kate) on Jimmy Kimmel, she said that tonight's episode is just the start and that the intensity is going to continue through the finale. She also mentioned that a big reveal in the finale gave her goosebumps. The final hours of the season sound promising!]

Motifs/Symbolism
Power struggles and peace (or illusions of peace)
More Daddy issues
Trust issues
The Wizard of Oz

Questions

  • What was Richard doing in the jungle – not having aged between the flashbacks and present time?
  • What was with Ben’s mom in the jungle? Another manifestation?
  • Why do The Others need Ben?
  • What will become of Locke? and Jacob?
  • What the heck was Jacob?
  • What happened to Annie before the later flashback?

Answers/Explanations

  • (Orientation tape) Compound surrounded by sonar fence to protect from the ‘wildlife’ on the island… “There are properties on this island that exist nowhere else on earth. Our mission is to study these properties for the benefit of mankind...” Of course, that wasn’t really new info.
  • Naomi must be working for Penny, not The Others…
  • Roger Work Man is Ben’s biological father – he was on the way to the Pearl station

Next week on LOST

  • Charlie on the chopping block
  • Lostaways decide to fight back when The Others come for Sun
  • DS (Drive Shaft) ring -
  • Sticks of dynamite
  • “My people, they’re coming right now!”

Do you have theories? Did you post a recap? Please leave a link in the comments… I am so curious to know what you think!

LOST- "The Man Behind the Curtain" Pre-show Thoughts

As we near the season 3 finale of LOST (only 3 more shows!), I am so very curious how the season will end. Will we get more answers? Will they only lead to more questions? Will I end up loving or hating the finale? Will I make it until December without looking any spoilers?!? [I've been SO good this year - avoiding the forums and spoiler sites!]

Last week’s show “The Brig“, revealed a very significant connection between two of the LOSTaways, yet raised an entire slew of questions. (What are Juliet & Jack hiding? What is Ben going to show Locke? Who is Naomi? Is Kate pregnant?)

In anticipation of tonight’s epic episode, I’ve ventured out to read about “The Man Behind the Curtain”. Hopefully, we’ll learn some real answers about The Others, Dharma, and/or The Island. I love that the show is so full of connections and literary clues and so rich in ‘mythology’.

Here are a few things I have come across:

From TVGuide.com:

Lost

10 pm/ET ABC New

Locke’s dead dad means one down and four to go, doesn’t it? Charlie remains the prime target, but he should get a reprieve since he’s flashback-boy next week. Tonight, it’s Ben’s turn on center stage. As he begins to let Locke in on the island’s secrets, we’ll begin to find out some of his own, including Ben’s ties to the Dharma Initiative. Incidentally, the actress (Carrie Preston) playing Ben’s mother is the wife of Michael Emerson, the actor who plays big, bad Ben. Meanwhile, that raid on the castaway camp Ben was talking about last week was to take place in three days (island time). Does that mean it’s tonight? And why did Ben tell Locke about it, anyway? — Paul Droesch

Apparently, there are to be 3 more deaths before the end of the season? I inadvertently read a spoiler and read they were Charlie, Sayid and Kate. The first has been foreshadowed, but the last two have me baffled. I hate when they kill off characters. Although, I did get over the loss of Shannon, Boone, and Eko. I’m not sure if I would enjoy next season with these suggested deaths.

BuddyTV has a collection of links pertinent to this week’s episode and spoilers dropped by the show producers. The links to The Tailsection recount an interesting theory/literary formula possibly in play.

I love that this show could have you talking or researching for hours. I know I’ve barely touched the surface… Perhaps there is meaning behind the storylines and clues, perhaps it is merely entertainment. Either way I appreciate it for what it is worth. I only wish I didn’t have to wait so long between seasons.

(I’ll be back later with my usual show recap!)
