LOST – Eggtown (2-21-08)

After watching the end of the episode, I got goosebumps! Did you??? I thought the writing and how the storyline was revealed was excellent.

Our question of why Kate wasn’t in jail was answered. And we know that she’ll always be in CA. (I mean who would leave that nice nanny and spacious house in the O.C.?) We also find out who “he” is.

We also find out that in addition to the Oceanic 6, there were 2 that also survived the crash (in their fabricated post-island story).

Kate may be snuggling with Sawyer, but she loves Jack back. She went back to the barracks to see what life lie ahead of her if she went back with Jack. That leaves the question… what happened to cause Kate and Jack not to end up together post-island?

From the look on Jack’s face after being invited to the house, he is haunted by Aaron. I’m guessing that Aaron’s “rescue” was a result something he did not agree with – either he was taken against Claire’s will or Claire died. I’m also guessing that Kate doesn’t want her mom to meet Aaron for fear she might know it’s not really Kate’s baby (assuming it isn’t Kate’s baby, but Claire’s).

The helicopter hasn’t arrived. Much like Desmond’s boat never left the island. However, I think Desmond’s boat has more to do with the magnetic pull (pre-violet sky). The island seems to be on a time delay, so there is still a physical anomaly with the island.

In the previews, we see there is a “storm” that the helicopter must enter. I wonder if that is what Juliet slept through on her way to the island. Like there’s some Bermuda Triangle properties going on. (I don’t read the forums or spoilers, so I’m sure this theory has come up before.)

Good stuff & observations

  • Show opens with a close up of John’s eye (What is up with the eye motif? The island eye sees all? LOL)
  • It’s morning and we also see Locke in the kitchen preparing food and pulling something from a bookshelf. A play off of the season 2 premier of Desmond in the hatch and season 4 with Jack in his L.A. kitchen.
  • Underground tunnels in Ben’s house which probably connect to other areas of the island.
  • Ben’s in lock down again. Even more interesting (and foreshadowing) is John making himself at home in Locke’s house and becoming more Ben-like…
  • I need to get a Dharma coffee mug!
  • Kate is still calling Sawyer by his real first name, while Sawyer is calling her Freckles again.
  • More one-liners from Hurley
  • No one of the Oceanic 6 ever answers direct questions from people
  • Sawyer becoming the island poster child for literacy and lenscrafters

    • I didn’t mean it… – Jack

Questions

  • What little memory experiment were Daniel and Charlotte doing with the cards? (I think they were sent to test/compare the physical properties of the island)
  • Wouldn’t it be completely odd to move into The Others’ barracks? Didn’t they just disappear? I assume John knows where they are (and presumably The Others trust him).
  • Who does Miles work for? Dharma? Hanso? And why does he specifically ask for $3.2 million dollars?
  • Why wasn’t the freighter answering the satellite phone?
  • Why does Kate have Aaron? Especially after being reluctant to hold him.
  • How did Ben get off the island since the sub is blown?
  • Jack, Hurley, Kate, Aaron… Who are the other Oceanic 6?!?!

LOST: Left Behind

Previously on:
Sawyer’s flashback (The Big Con) with Cassie
Jack and Kate on the other island
John blowing up the pier (sub?)

Moments/Notes/Quotes:

  • Juliet wasn’t taken down by Kate so easily
  • Kate flashback:
    • Car trouble in Iowa (as Lucy)
    • Cassie, Sawyer’s girlfriend/con, pulling the scam that Sawyer did with her
  • Appearance of the backgammon board
  • John is going with the Others??? Where?
  • “Forgiveness isn’t one of their strong suits”
  • Hurley pretending not to talk to Sawyer
  • The sight of the Others donning gas masks (in full view of Kate) before gassing Kate
  • Kate taking tips from Cassie
  • Kate waking up in the middle of the forest floor and cuffed to Juliet (hope there aren’t any spiders!)
  • “I ain’t gonna get the Korean folks”
  • Sawyer vs. The Fish
  • “I’m just selling Bibles” (I was wondering why she was wearing that hat at first)
  • Juliet knowing it was going to rain – exactly as Locke knew (did The Others dispose of Juliet and replace her with Locke?)
  • WTH was the stomping monster that flashed light?!!!
  • Watching Hurley coach Sawyer was like watching The Ghost of Christmas Past in The Christmas Carol
  • “Well hey there little baby” [cue crying]
  • Kate’s mom’s diner: Sawyer ate there the final day of his “Big Con”
  • The Others don’t know what the smoke monster is, but the fence protects them.
  • Showing Sawyer partake in the community was purposeful to show day-to-day life of the beached Losties. I suppose they had to find a way to survive and find sustenance.
  • “Since when did anyone around here vote?”
  • “Leader? WTH are you smoking?”
  • Standing at the bushes once again looking in at the village.
  • Juliet graciously lets Kate find Jack.
  • (Was Ben ever going to really let Jack and Juliet leave the island?)
  • Jack must have gotten a good dose of the gas if he was unconscious while Kate and Juliet were out in the jungle for the night…
  • Jack’s apartment looks ransacked. What was the need for that? He looks like he took a beating too… he needed help to get up?
  • Cassie’s pregnant (not a con and it is Sawyer’s), so we know it was early within the 9 months since Sawyer had left.

Good stuff:
Seeing Cassie and knowing she bounced back from Sawyer leaving.

Kate trying to reach out to her mother, but completely misunderstanding how her actions affected her mother who did not necessarily want “out” of the marriage.

Hurley conning Sawyer into playing nice.

Juliet keeps me guessing on whether she should be trusted as an ally or not. We know she has been left behind for unknown reasons. Surely she would have known of an “emergency plan” to evacuate. The fact that she doesn’t offer any information on where the Others have gone leads me to believe that she might know more (I’m guessing they have some sort of underground compound.)

She falsely led Kate to believe they were left alone in the woods. Would she have been able to carry Kate the entire way by herself? She had to have help especially without having left a trail. She knows more than she’s letting on and she’s using her relationship with Jack to her advantage.

We see that the perimeter fence offers protection from the smoke monster. Juliet knew this and activated its force field in time to ward off its advances. She stood at the fence line and did not flinch as the smoke rushed at her. Again, it seems like she knows more than she’s letting on.

Motifs/Themes:
Lying/conning

Questions:
Is Juliet really “left behind”. Or, “Left Behind” to spy on the Losties?

So, no one dug up the diamonds??? Poor whats-her-name and Paulo from last week!

Any idea what the monster’s flashing light was???

What do you think? Did you like this week’s episode? Did this week shed any light on the storyline with the Others or just create more confusion?
